Things you might like to find: Music

In my last post, I explained how I liked to help people find things and DO things, so now I will start with something that I love and love to share, music. So here goes!

INDIE MUSIC

Do you like hearing new and upcoming indie musicians but are never quite sure where to get it? Are you tired of your friends always acting super cool and "underground" because they only listen to "underground"  music? And do you like FREE music? Well, now you can discover indie bands, act super cool back to your "underground" friends AND recieve free music via a weekly email from the indie music reviewer! Simply click on this link NOW http://www.indiemusicreviewer.com/
The Creative Loafing  website also has some great indie music. While the website focuses on only a few cities' events, it is a good place to discover new bands.       http://www.creativeloafing.com/

SOME MUSICIANS I LIKE THAT YOU MIGHT LIKE TOO! (My personal favorites)

I recently interviewed a band from Australia. They are called Wagons, and you can check them out here:
http://www.wagonsmusic.com/  Their music can be classified as Australian rock-country or country-rock, but it's definitely not like country music from South Alabama!

If you haven't heard of Amanda Palmer, then you are missing out on the most fascinating artist I know. Her music is very hard to describe; I've heard it described as "punk-caberet," but you know, you better just listen to it and see for yourself. http://amandapalmer.net/

I'm just going to list a few of my favorites now. I might add descriptions of their music later. (but probably not) Just check them out, they're all good.

Allison Weiss
Allie Moss
Bess Rogers
Dylan Gilbert
Bottle Up and Explode
Zoe Boekbinder
Death in the Park

Oh and one of my all-time favorites, from Dothan, Al

Bobby Lee Hill: The Changing Me

I hope you have discovered some new music here that you like!

Need help finding something? Let me help you! (except you're never going to find that missing sock, sorry)

I have discovered lately that I really enjoy promoting other people, their business ventures, ideas, art, etc. etc.

It started last Sunday. My good friend Lennon Harrison is a pastry chef and has been talking about starting his own cake business for  awhile now. I've been saying to him, almost everytime I talk to him, start a website! get business cards! make a facebook page! And any other thing I might think of. And everytime, he would say, yea, I'm planning on working on it today, but then the very next day, there would be no website (not even the beginnings of one), no facebook, no business cards. Now, Lennon is very talented and makes awesome beautiful cakes that in my book would be considered art, but he's not so good at the marketing part. So, on Sunday, I decided this had gone on long enough! I made him his very own facebook page just for his cakes. And then one of our friends said she wanted to be his assistant, AND she knows graphic design people who can just whip him up a website and someone who makes business cards! (We are currently still in the process of getting either of these things) But wow! In only a couple hours, Lennon has a facebook page, business cards, and a website, all just on the verge of being made! Needless to say, I'm already working on finding him some clients. In fact, if you need a cake or pastry then please take a look at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Lennon-Harrison/173958439349621 or even if you DONT need a cake, please take a look at his cakes. You won't be disappointed!

I guess my love for promoting other people's things didn't just start on Sunday, I've always liked to share new music or artists with everyone I know. And I've always secretly, and sometimes not so secretly, thought I could be pretty decent at promoting. I've just never gotten the chance until now.

And that's not all! I really like helping people find what they are looking for, whatever that might be, except your lost personal belonging, I probably can't help there. But if you are looking for something to do, new music, good travel deals, or other things I can't think of right now, then I want to help you find it! Or if you have an idea of something you want to do and can't quite get up all the motivation to do it alone, I want to help you do it! Need someone to help promote your work, then I'm your gal! I find that most ventures are a lot easier with someone helping you; I know that for me personally, I work way better when I have a creative partner, or at least someone to push you along and encourage you.

So contact me at Brookitaspivey@gmail.com or http://www.facebook.com/brooke.spivey#!/profile.php?id=786800499 or just leave me a comment and I will help you do what you want to do!!

Looking for attractive actors only! You fatties stay out.

When I start making my own movies, I want to do all the casting, and when I do the casting, I will never say that I am looking for "attractive" people. I found a site recently that had student short film auditions, (I think they were students) and almost all of them said under the description of each role "attractive." For one, this makes me not want to work with them, and two it makes me think they are definitely an amateur. It makes me think this for a few reasons. First of all, the word attractive is so cliche, so old. No one wants to see just attractive, at least I don't. I want to see interesting and different looking. The word attractive sounds completely generic and standard.  It makes me think the person making this movie has little creativity and no unique vision. Ok, if the add for the audition said "attractive in a different and interesting way," then ok fine, but even then, it's so intimidating that people who are attractive in those ways probably don't know it.

Real actors come in all shapes and sizes, and I'm not just saying that because I don't fit this generic attractive term. The most amazing actors that I know are interesting and wonderful looking, but not all of them are standard beauties. Sure, I want to lose weight so I can get much more of a variety of roles, but even if I was thinner I would still look "different" and not like your typical "attractive" (whatever that even means) person.

One of my favorite actors, Jonah Hill, wasn't your typical muscle chiseled sex god. But you know,I always found him sexy anyway, and he inspired me and made me believe I could do it too. I mean, he's skinny now, but he did it for a role he was gonna play. Actors lose weight, gain weight, gain muscle, shave their head, and all other kinds of things to their bodies for roles. But he wasn't skinny when he first started, and it did not matter one flippin bit. In fact, it probably just added to his character.

"Attractiveness" just screams creative mediocrity. And I didn't write all this so I could write about my love for Jonah Hill, I wrote it because man, those audition adds just really pissed at me.

Definitely time for an update

I've really been skimping out on this blog. I'm sure I have many disappointed readers/viewers. :( But fear not! I am blogging now to make up for it! So three, two, one...here we go!

A couple weekends ago my parents, and my cousin Stefanie came to visit me. I wasn't really sure how to entertain them, since I just moved here and all. So, I took them to little five points, and I think we all had a pretty good time. Here are some pictures of the weekend.

I took them to Arden's Garden, because it's my favorite

Here is my cousin texting away!

Squidbillies anyone?

Aww, the happy family!

Mis padres

And mi prima, playing the gee-tar

I recently interviewed the band Wagons. They are an Indie country-rock band from Australia (and quite a big deal there, as I'm sure they will be a very big deal here soon as well!) You can see the interview at:

I HIGHLY recommend you check out their music. You can do so here:

Shannon also came to see me recently, and it just so happens she came the same time as the Wagons show! Here are some pictures from that night!
